Family Therapy Services

Family relationships are an incredibly important source of connection and support, but families can also become stuck in patterns of conflict, misunderstanding, or disconnection. At Beacon Light Psychological Services, we provide family therapy in Portland, Maine, to help children, adolescents, adults, and caregivers communicate more effectively, work through challenges, and build healthier relationships.

Our approach is collaborative, practical, and tailored to the needs of each family. Rather than assigning blame to one person, family therapy examines how family members affect one another and identifies changes that can improve the functioning of the family as a whole.

How Family Therapy Can Help

Families often seek therapy when familiar ways of addressing a problem are no longer working. Even when everyone wants things to improve, repeated arguments, avoidance, emotional reactions, and misunderstandings can make it difficult to move forward.

Family therapy can provide a structured setting in which family members can better understand one another, identify unhelpful patterns, and practice more effective ways of communicating and solving problems.

Treatment may focus on:

  • Frequent conflict or arguments

  • Communication difficulties

  • Parent-child or parent-adolescent relationship concerns

  • Emotional distance or disconnection

  • Difficulty adjusting to family changes

  • Differences in parenting approaches

  • Behavioral or emotional concerns affecting the family

  • Stress related to anxiety, depression, ADHD, autism, or other mental health concerns

  • Challenges involving siblings or blended families

  • Rebuilding trust following a difficult experience

What is Family Therapy?

Family therapy is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on relationships and patterns of interaction within a family. Depending on the family’s needs, sessions may include the entire family, a child or adolescent with one or both parents, adult family members, siblings, or different combinations of participants over time.

The goal is not necessarily to determine who is right or wrong. Instead, the therapist helps family members understand how patterns develop, how each person contributes to those patterns, and what everyone can do differently to create meaningful change.

Family therapy may be provided as the primary treatment or used alongside individual psychotherapy, parent coaching, medication management, or other services.

Our Approach to Family Therapy

Family therapy at Beacon Light Psychological Services is individualized rather than based on a one-size-fits-all model. Your therapist will work with your family to clarify the concerns bringing you to treatment, understand each person’s perspective, and develop practical goals.

Sessions are intended to be active and purposeful. Families may practice new communication skills, develop plans for responding to difficult situations, or try specific strategies between appointments.

Depending on your family’s needs, treatment may incorporate strategies drawn from:

  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy

  • Behavioral and parent-management approaches

  • Emotion-focused interventions

  • Communication and collaborative problem-solving strategies

  • Acceptance- and mindfulness-based approaches

  • Psychoeducation about mental health and child development

  • Skills for emotional regulation and conflict resolution
