Frequently Asked Questions
General FAQs
-
We do not accept insurance at this time. Clients pursuing our services must pay out of pocket. However, for evaluations and psychotherapy, we can provide you with an itemized list of services (i.e., a superbill) as an “out-of-network” provider for you to submit to your insurance company. Please note that many insurance companies will not reimburse for an evaluation. Click here to learn more about out-of-network reimbursement. We do not provide superbills for parent coaching.
-
We offer payment plans and financing for evaluations through CareCredit. We give discounts for comprehensive evaluations for children under 8. This is because less testing occurs for this age group.
-
We do not prescribe medication, but an evaluation can assist with determining if your child is a possible candidate for medication.
-
We do not currently have a waitlist for our services.
Evaluation FAQs
-
An evaluation can range from $2400 to over $4000 depending on the referral question. Certain evaluations have a reduced fee for young children. Visit our rates page for additional information.
-
We evaluate individuals ages 5 to 21. We make some exceptions to this based on particular circumstances.
-
The testing is often administered by a psychometrist or doctoral practicum student who has specialized training in test administration and observing behavior. The clinician also conducts portions of the testing and is entirely responsible for its interpretation.
-
We administer a range of standardized tests intended to measure aspects of cognitive and emotional functioning. These tests are administered via paper-and-pencil, iPad, and on the computer.
-
Our evaluations can include components of academic testing depending on the referral question. Psychoeducational evaluations will include comprehensive academic testing.
-
Yes, we offer a targeted evaluation for referral questions related to autism. An evaluation for autism can also be added to a comprehensive evaluation if appropriate.
-
Yes, we are trained in the ADOS-2 and use it for autism evaluations when appropriate.
-
School evaluations usually focus on skills needed for academic success including testing intelligence and academic skills. Although these evaluations are helpful in determining whether a child qualifies for special education, they do not diagnose disorders (e.g., ADHD, autism, etc.) and are not as comprehensive as a neuropsychological or psychological evaluation, which measures more cognitive abilities and goes into more depth assessing emotional, behavioral, and social functioning.
-
The testing session occurs in-person at our downtown Portland office. However, we offer intake and feedback appointments either in-person or over Zoom (HIPAA-compliant).
-
The report contains background information on your child, behavioral observations during testing, a results summary, clinical impressions including any diagnoses, and tailored and practical recommendations for how to support your child at home, school, and in the community.
-
We usually send a final copy of the report within a week or two of the feedback.
Psychotherapy FAQs
-
A therapy is $300 and individual 50-minute sessions are $200 each. Visit our rates page for additional information.
-
We provide therapy for individuals ages 4 to 24. We make some exceptions to this based on particular circumstances.
-
Therapy is primarily done by a licensed clinical psychologist. However, we sometimes have doctoral students conduct psychotherapy as part of training. They are directly supervised by a licensed psychologist.
-
We primarily use cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), which is an empirically supported treatment for a range of mental health concerns. We also integrate other modalities as needed.
-
For young children, parents are frequently involved. For children and adolescents, we strive to create a safe and comfortable space for clients to express themselves fully without parents present. However, we also feel it is important that parents are aware of goals. As such, we meet with parents occasionally to give them updates on the therapy process.
Parent Coaching FAQs
-
The 90-minute initial intake appointment is $225 and each subsequent 50-minute session is $125.
-
We conduct parent coaching for parents with children ages 2 to 12.
-
We ask parents commit to a minimum 3 sessions to get the maximum benefit from coaching. Additional sessions can be scheduled as needed.
-
The first 3 parent coaching sessions are designed to build a strong foundation. In Session 1, we gather background information and discuss the principles of behavior therapy. In Session 2, we review behavior data you’ve collected and discuss how to apply behavior principles at home. You will then receive a customized behavior plan. During Session 3, we review this behavior plan and answer any questions.
-
Parents are welcome to continue with ongoing coaching sessions if they need additional support, strategy refinement, or help navigating new challenges over time.
-
These coaching sessions are primarily focused on helping parents address behaviors at home, where they have the most influence and opportunity for change. While some strategies may carry over to school settings, our focus is on equipping families with tools they can use in daily routines, transitions, and interactions at home.
-
We strongly encourage both parents or legal guardians to participate in parent coaching when possible, as consistency across caregivers often leads to better outcomes. However, we understand that full participation is not always feasible.
-
If parents share joint legal custody, both must provide consent for services—even if only one parent chooses to attend sessions. This is because the child is considered the client under our model of care, and we require legal consent from all parties who share decision-making authority.
If one parent is not available or declines to participate, services may proceed with the other parent’s involvement, as long as legal consent has been obtained from both.
